The Digital Road: Who is the driver? That was the theme for the 20th year of the Trends in Automotive Logistics (TAL 2020) conference, held in Pilsen at the end of this February. Regarding TAL 2020’s key question – “who is the driver in digitalisation?” – the speakers all agreed: it’s people.

Many inspiring and surprising quotes on digital transformations and logistics overall resounded at TAL. Come join us for a look back at a few that especially interested us, watch selected presentation videos, or follow our AIMagazine. In time we’ll also add a recap for those of you who still prefer reading to watching.

“What we’re experiencing today is not a digital revolution; we’re actually experiencing the lowest productivity growth in the last 120 years” was a surprising take by Filip Dřímalka in his speech on how to kick-start a company’s innovation. But he encouragingly also noted: “You just have to be around innovators, and soon you’ll be innovators too.”

“Factories with no lights ARE NOT our vision” …and neither are factories with no people. Marco Prüglmeier from BMW Group (cover photo) wasn’t the only speaker to reassure listeners that automation is here to serve with and for people. So then, what is the logistics vision at BMW Group?

“People OR robots? No, people AND robots.” Ask not whether robots will replace people, but rather how robots can support people in their work – this was the call to reflection sounded by Faouzi Grebici from OMRON.

“Robots are here not to replace us, they are here to help us,“ echoed Paul Norford from Zebra Technologies.

“In logistics, we essentially all do the same thing: we try to fit a maximum of things into a minimum of space.” Halka Kračmerová and David Štětina then segued into revealing the logistics solution at Fehrer Bohemia.

“Change isn’t about changing some system’s Excel file.” Logistics Manager Jan Stejskal revealed everything that changed at Autoneum CZ thanks to advanced production planning.

And don’t forget: "Logistics is a simple field." At least according to a legend of Czech logistics, Jiří Cee – the departing head of logistics at Škoda Auto and the Green Logistics guarantor for the entirety of VW.
